Chelsea Goalkeeper Review – November 2011
With nearly a third of the season already in the history books, now seems like a good time to see how the squad is performing.
We start at the back with our three main goalkeepers and how they have fared so far this season.
Petr Cech –
Despite a defence that has leaked goals and a shaky performance against Arsenal, the Czech shot stopper has been back to his best this season.
In his seventh season at the club, he has regained the confidence that Stephen Hunt stripped of him and is now a commanding presence with amazing reflexes and a new found penalty saving prowess that proves he is back at the top of his game.
He has lost the fear that seemed to blight him, he earned plaudits against Blackburn where he had a good game and showed his toughness by refusing to come off after breaking his nose.
In this form his performances will probably be worth 5-10 extra points at the end of the season.
Highlight – Man of the match substitute performance against Everton which included a penalty save
Rating – 7.5 out of 10
Henrique Hilario
Injuries to Petr Cech have given the 36 year old two rare starts in the Premier League and he performed sufficiently to restore some confidence, avoiding any major mishaps.
Despite this he is in the twilight of his career and appearances are likely to be limited if Petr Cech remains fit, meaning that like Turnbull this is likely to be his last season at the club.
Highlight – Getting to start two Premier League games
Rating – 6 out of 10
Ross Turnbull – 4/10
Having only started one game this season he managed to get himself sent off against Everton in the Carling cup, yet another setback in a mediocre Chelsea career.
His future at Chelsea is not too bright having failed to secure the number two spot he was signed to occupy, therefore he may not have long left as it is doubtful anyone sees him as a potential number one at the club.
Highlight: Getting a red card v Everton that allowed Petr Cech to steal the show
Rating: 4 out of 10
Honourable Mention – Jamal Blackman
Eighteen year old Jamal Blackman made the bench for the first time in a senior fixture against Arsenal

Chelsea vs. Arsenal Player Ratings
Starting XI:
Petr Cech – 8
Made a stunning save from a Arshavin shot in the first half and did everything well as Arsenal pressured during the second half.
John Terry -8
Solid defensive display in partnership with Alex to keep the Gunners at bay
Alex – 9
Amazing in defence and the quality of his goal is difficult to put into words
Branislav Ivanovic – 6
Strong defensively but as against Manchester City and Marseille he was often caught out of position as Arsenal broke
Ashley Cole – 8
Strong, solid and denied a goal, he defended majestically and provided the cross for Drogba to score the opening goal.
Ramires – 7
His best game in a blue shirt so far, his crunching tackle in the build up to the opening goal was inspirational. He still has a tendency to give the ball away needlessly but a much improved performance
Mikel – 8
Great performance protecting the back line from the Nigerian as Arsenal just could not break down a resolute defence
Michael Essien – 7
Solid performance from the Ghanaian as he played his role in the victory
Florent Malouda – 8
Fine form continues as he was everywhere on the pitch and threatening on the counter attack always providing an output
Nicholas Anelka -8
Should have scored from a chance of his own making after a poor back pass, however with Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda he looked at home as Chelsea played counter attacking football
Didier Drogba -8
Took half an hour to get started but loves playing against Arsenal, sublime finish from a difficult angle to boot
Substitutes
Paulo Ferreria – 8
Did a fantastic job coming off the bench in the final quarter of the game
Sturridge and Zhirkov - Little time to make an impact
Heroes and Villians
Chelsea Heroes - Everyone so hard to find a poor performance, but who was your man of the match?
Chelsea Villian - N/A

Chelsea Player Ratings v Marseille
Barely tested despite pressure in second half from Marseille, clean sheet and job done
Branislav Ivanovic – 6 Caught out of position regularly as Marseille counter attacked a worrying trend that threatens to cancel out the skills that the Serbian possesses, lucky we were not punished during the game.
John Terry – 9 Excellent little flick for the first goal and he performed well with Alex to prevent Marseille converting possession into goals
Alex – 8 His free kick that rattled the bar was worth the admission price on its own, also performed well defensively. Defenders and goalkeepers alike must worry when they here the chants of ALEX, ALEX, ALEX as he lines up a 35 yard free kick.
Ashley Cole -7 Effective but did not produce his usual world class brilliance, still impressive though
Mikel – 7 Much better from Mikel compared to the Manchester City game however Chelsea struggled in midfield second half.
Ramires – 6 Better than against Manchester City but improvement needed if he is to challenge for a place with the return of Frank Lampard
Michael Essien - 6
Congratulations to MarktheDog for noticing my incompetence, for that reason I have decided to honour his rating of a six!
Malouda -7
Good game for the Frenchman without being excellent
Yuri Zhirkov -5
Ok in the first half but terrible in the second, he asked for more game time, he needs to start performing if he expects his wish to be granted in the long term.
Gael Kakuta – 7
Another start and an improved performance, still feeling his way into the first team, it was obvious that every fan was tracking his every touch of the ball with an air of expectation and hope. More to come
Nicholas Anelka – 7
Cheeky penalty and a solid performance from the Frenchman who rarely seems to have a bad game these days.
Substitutes
Daniel Sturridge – 6
Missed a screamer but was played out of position on the right rather than through the centre
Josh McEachran – 6 Little time to make an impact

Chelsea v Blackpool – Player Ratings
Chelsea defeated Blackpool by four goals to nil to extend their 100% record to 5 games and extend our early season lead at the top of the table to four points.
Based on their performances here are the eChelseaFC player ratings
Petr Cech – 7
Forced to make some key saves despite having a quiet game including one which was described by Andy Gray as “World Class”
Paulo Ferreria – 7
Has had his longest run in the first team in as long as I can remember due to squad rotation and injuries he has started four of our five Premier League fixtures improving in each one to show how a run of games can improve a players form an performances.
The former Portuguese international was good going forward today and solid in defence
Alex – 6
Not his best performance today with a few off moments that almost led to Chelsea conceding however this should not consider the Chelsea faithful too much.
Branislav Ivanovic – 7
A deft flick on to set up the first goal earns the Serbian a higher rating than his central defensive counterpart although both looked fragile for a game which produced a clean sheet.
Ashley Cole – 9
Showed his fitness today as he operated as both left back and left winger simultaneously in a vibrant attacking display. This was all in addition to his usual defensive solidity.
Ramires – 7
Solid performance in his full home debut, still looks to be finding his feet in the physical Premier League, but I ahve confidence he will represent a solid investment for the blues.
Mikel – 8
Like Paulo Ferreria he seems to have improved with an extended run in the first team and this was another fine performance from the young Nigerian.
Prior to the game he also had the highest successful passing ratio in the Premier League at a hugely impressive 94% even if most of these were sideways.
Michael Essien – 8
Superb display from Chelsea’s hottest summer signing, didn’t quite have his shooting boots on but contributed with a great performance.
Soloman Kalou – 8
Scored a simple goal and made some useful runs in behind the Blackpool line but wasted many chances to put the Chelsea score towards double figures.
Florent Malouda -8.5
Had a great game and scored a brace but he should have scored a hat trick but to complain about wasted chances at 4-0 would be harsh on the Frenchman.
Didier Drogba – 8
Scored one and set one up, just a usual day at the office for the powerful Ivorian who should have also won a penalty for his side but for the referee’s benevolence.
eChelseaFC Man of the Match – Ashley Cole

Chelsea v West Ham (A) Player Ratings
Following our 3-1 victory over the Hammers, here are the eChelseaFC player ratings, let us know if you agree?
Petr Cech – 7
Did not do a lot wrong and was unlucky that his punched clearance landed at the feet of Scott Parker for the West Ham goal.
Paulo Ferreria – 8
Comfortable game for Paulo, who has improved every game this season and provided the assist for the third goal
Branislav Ivanovic – 7
Rare start in the centre of defence and after a slow start he looked at ease for most of the game.
John Terry – 7
Despite conceding their first goal of the season Chelsea looked in control defensively for most of the match, including our former West Ham trainee captain.
Ashley Cole – 8
Mr Consistency, excellent again today
Ramires -7
On his full Chelsea debut Ramires showed he was fully fit with a full 90 minute shift in which he showed signs that the Chelsea transfer policy this season even if at times it was clear he had alot to learn against physically strong English opponents.
Michael Essien – 9
Two goals and a colossal performance from the Ghanaian who scored two goals to show that he is back from his injury and ready to show what he can do in the Premier League once more.
Mikel – 8
One of his best performances in blue, showing that despite the midfield competition he can do a job for the blues having started all four games of the season so far.
Nicholas Anelka -7
No goals but plenty of movement from the Frenchman, continuing to be a real asset in the development of attacks from deep.
Didier Drogba – 6.5
Not his best game of the season, with little service and a slightly selfish attitude, most likely a slight blip on what will be another gargantuan season for the Ivorian.
Soloman Kalou -7
Bizarre goal which sums up why we love the Ivorian despite his sometimes frustrating wastage, otherwise average display.
Star Sub: Gael Kakuta – 7
15 exciting minutes from the young Frenchman who excites with every time he appears for the first team.
