Chelsea Beat Man City In Monday Night Thriller

6

Wow what a game, after going down so early we all feared the worse, however after riding out twenty minutes of Man City dominance we played our way back into the game and were able to get the result.

Man City took the lead inside two minutes but we levelled via Raul Meireles after from great work from Daniel Sturridge against his former club.

Level at half time, we came out with a fire in our belly playing the better football with a deeper line that frustrated the efforts of Man City to create any forward momentum.

After Gael Clichy was sent off for a second yellow card hauling down Ramires we were pushing hard for the winner.

City went on the defensive and with just 6 minutes to go it looked like they may hold on until a Sturridge shot hit an arm and a penalty was awarded.

Up stepped substitute Lampard to fire home under pressure and put us ahead, something that seemed unthinkable when Balotelli gave City the lead so early on.

With 5 minutes left City roared back into life but the impressive Drogba took over as the team passed and held the ball beautifully to deny Man City even a sniff of a goal.

The highlight being Drogba skinning two Man City players from nothing and launching an audacious shot, we held on and recorded a much needed victory.

7 points off the lead and back into third, impossible is nothing!

FamousCFC.com Man of The Match – Daniel Sturridge

Created the first goal and won the penalty for the Frank Lampard winner, another magnificent performance from the young striker.

Man City Preview – Who Should Play?

Today could be a defining moment for our season, win and we can maintain the unlikely hope of winning the league this season.

To lose would see this illusion annihilated and our season in the league categorised by a battle to finish in the top four and maintain Champions League football.

After some rocky moments we have at least had a good week leading into the game with victories over Newcastle and Valencia.

We have the attacking prowess to challenge Mancini’s men however if we are to succeed we will need to ensure that we minimise the individual mistakes that have plagued are toughest games this season.

We have played well against Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool this season but found ourselves on the losing side after errors from across the squad led to us conceding defining goals.

So who should play?

Slowly the best team for AVB is becoming clear with Ivanovic in the middle due to the absence of David Luiz (suspension). This will allow Boswinga to play at right back.

In midfield I feel that Romeu has earnt the right to start as our defensive option leading AVB the choice of whether to pair Lampard or Meireles with Ramires in the two central midfield positions.

I think that Lampard should get the nod here, he will be well rested and has the ability to produce something special.

Upfront a trio of Mata, Drogba and Sturridge almost picks itself at the moment.

FamousCFC.com suggestion:

Cech

Cole

Terry

Ivanovic

Boswinga

Lampard

Romeu

Ramires

Mata

Drogba

Sturridge

Player Ratings v Valencia

Subscribe to us on your kindle in UK or the USA

It was great for me to return to Stamford Bridge last night and even better to see such a polished performance from the Blues in this do-or-die match with Valencia.

There were standout performances all across the pitch, from JT at the back to the outstanding Oriol Romeu in midfield, Juan Mata was breathtaking as always and two-goal hero Didier Drogba showed why he still a devastating centre forward.

Chelsea player ratings from last night’s game.

Petr Cech – 8

Had little to do but what he did he did very well.

Athletic save from a long range effort from David Albelda early on and a good reaction save diving to his right in the second half from Sofiane Fegouli’s header.

A lot less nervy now Cech is content to bang the ball upfield on occasion instead of always playing it out.

Ashley Cole – 7

Was quick and solid defensively. I have seen Cole offer more going forward but defending is his number one job and he kept the Valencia midfield quiet. His pressing was good and he was quick to close players down from minute one to 90.

David Luiz – 7

One instance of giving the ball away but on the whole a much improved display from Sideshow Bob.

He covered Terry very well and showed signs of communication improving which bodes well as we look to go on a run during this period of important matches.

John Terry – 9

Terry’s best game of the season for me. He didn’t put a foot wrong and kept the dangerous Soldado quiet all game.

He cut out every pass that came his way and led the team impeccably.

Branislav Ivanovic – 6

Caught in possession a couple of times and probably the weakest of the Chelsea back line in this match.

However he showed his strength to win the ball back on many occasions and was a force going forward to feed Danny Sturridge on the right.

Oriol Romeu – 10

My man of the match. Romeu played the holding role exceptionally. He was quick to close down the Valencia midfield and was calm in possession.

As cool as Makelele with the ball and as energetic as Essien without it. Has to be picked ahead of Mikel every time.

Ramires – 8

Got that all important second goal that eased all the nerves, although the Valencia defence were caught out.

The Brazilian showed once again that he has a great engine and a habit of getting into goalscoring positions.

The fact that he’s taking his chances is an even more encouraging sign.

Raul Meireles – 6

Meireles made a couple of wrong decisions with the ball but his game suits this style of play better than Lampard’s.

If he lost the ball he was eager to win it back and it would be unfair to call him a weak link but by no means the standout player on the pitch.

Juan Mata – 8

Always a joy to watch. Mata has been Chelsea’s most consistent performer this year and last night was no different.

He set up Drogba twice and always seems to pick the right pass, not to mention fantastic control. I was also impressed with his willingness to defend during a sticky period at the start of the second half.

Daniel Sturridge – 7

He wants to play centre forward but he is making that role on the right his own. Showed quick feet and strong pace to find good positions for both himself and his team mates.

His eye for goal means he shoots instead of passing sometimes but as top scorer we’ll allow him that.

Didier Drogba – 9

AVB can’t play Torres if Drogba plays like this. Scoring two and setting up one, he showed great technique and vision for the opener, superb strength and a never-say-die attitude to set up Ramires and sublime skill and confidence for the clincher in the second half.

Subs:

John Obi Mikel – 6
Fernando Torres – 6
Florent Malouda – 6

None of the subs had time to make an impact. The starting 11 did the job for Chelsea last night.

Andre Villas Boas – 10

Dare I say it –Mourinho-esque. Triumph in the face of adversity. We played to win but defended with class and discipline at the same time.

Early goals calmed the nerves but AVB showed he can galvanise the team. The performance with the press afterwards also showed signs we’ve turned a corner.
